Dual Admission Program

Partnership Main Page

Northern Kentucky University and Gateway Technical and Community College have entered into a Dual Admission Program Agreement to benefit students from both institutions. The purpose of the agreement is to:

  • Encourage Gateway students to pursue a baccalaureate degree after completing an associate degree.
  • Ensure a smooth transition from Gateway to NKU for students continuing post-secondary education after earning an associate's degree at Gateway.
  • Enable NKU to track educational progress of prospective students.
  • Enable Gateway to track educational achievement of its graduates.
  • Make selected educational resources and co-curricular events available to students of both institutions.

Benefits of the Dual Admission Program

  • Dual Admission Program guarantees your acceptance into NKU as a junior provided you:
    • Complete all of the courses required for regular admissions to NKU at Gateway (including remedial and /developmental courses)
    • Complete the requirements for an associate's degree (see participating degree programs for specific degrees included in program) at Gateway
    • Maintain the proper GPA (2.0 minimum grade point average at time of transfer with an associate's degree). See Criteria for Declaring a Major at NKU.
  • Special advising will be available at both NKU and Gateway.
  • Opportunity to access services and participate in college life at both NKU and Gateway.
  • Eligible for Priority Registration in preparation for enrollment in first full semester at NKU.
  • Easier transition from Gateway to NKU
  • Access to recreational facilities and activities at NKU Health Center.
  • Ability to live in NKU student housing (subject to availability and payment of applicable housing rates and fees), see below for information on housing.
  • Ability to utilize materials and resources from Steely Library at NKU.
  • Specially coded NKU/Gateway identification card (use to check out library books, for access to the health center, and to attend athletic events at discount rates)
  • Same access to special events, performances, and special events as NKU students.
  • Access to NKU Learning Assistance Center tutoring.
  • Testing related to career interests and abilities through NKU Testing Center (additional fee required).
  • Parking privileges on NKU campus (available to all Gateway students with specially designed Dual Admission Gateway decal or hangtag).
  • Participation in special course introducting students to academic and social life at NKU.
  • NKU application fee waived for Dual Admission Program participants.
  • NKU e-mail account.

After Completion of Associate Degree at Gateway

Upon completion of the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree requirements at Gateway, a student will be accepted at NKU with junior standing (remedial/developmental coursework will not count toward satisfaction of graduation requirements). Students completing the Associate of Applied Science degree requirements may be accepted at NKU with junior standing if they have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours.

Eligible Programs

Students completing an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Applied Science Degree at Gateway are eligible for the Dual Admission Program.

$25 per Semester Fee for Participation

The fee for participation in the NKU/Gateway Dual Admissions Program is $25 for each semester of enrollment in the program. Students will be billed by NKU.

Upon completion of an associate's degree at Gateway, the NKU admission application fee is waived for students transferring to NKU.

Availability

The Dual Admission Program is open to all Gateway students who are enrolled in an associate degree program (i.e. Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science) designed for transfer to a baccalaureate program at NKU.

Students participating in other Gateway programs (i.e. Certificate, Diploma) will be eligible for the Dual Admission Program if an articulation degree is in effect between the two institutions. See http://partners.nku.edu/articulation.htm for complete list of articulation agreements and agreement details. Course equivalencies (Gateway to NKU) and remaining coursework required for completion of baccalaureate degree at NKU will be indicated in agreement.

Excluded Gateway Programs: Gateway students not enrolled in a specific associate degree transfer program (see eligible programs) or a program with an approved articulation agreement in place are not eligible for the benefits associated with the Dual Admission Program.

Application

Gateway students in good academic standing are encouraged to enter the Dual Admission Program within their first 30 credit hours after admission to Gateway Community and technical College. Gateway students desiring to participate in the Dual Admission Program (see program exceptions above) must complete an application and be accepted at Gateway prior to applying for the Dual Admission Program. Application for the Dual Admission program at NKU is available via web at http://partners.nku.edu/daapplication.pdf.

Complete the application online, select the print button to print a copy of the application. If you do not want to print the application online, select the print button and print the application. Complete the application by filling in the information requested.

After completing the application, sign the form and obtain a signature from a Gateway representative. See http://partners.nku.edu/contact.htm for list of representatives available on each of the Gateway campuses.

After obtaining the signature from a Gateway representative, mail the application with a check for $25.00 payable to NKU to:

Application Completed

After the NKU admissions application indicating participation in the Dual Admissions Program is completed, and the application fee is received, you will receive a letter indicating acceptance in the program and instructions for picking up your NKU All-Card. You will continue to receive a bill for $25.00 from NKU for each semester you participate in the program.

Discontinue Dual Admission Program

If you do not plan to continue your participation in the Dual Admission Program after the first semester, send an e-mail to moorea4@nku.edu indicating that you do not want to participate in the program for next semester.

NKU Dorm Housing

If you plan to request housing in the NKU Dorms (subject to availability), you should contact the NKU Housing Office prior to the beginning of the semester. The application for housing is available online at http://access.nku.edu/housing/apply.htm

IMPORTANT: Admission to specific NKU degree programs is contingent upon satisfactory performance at Gateway.

Criteria for Declaring a Major at NKU

In order to declare a major at NKU, students must meet the following general criteria:

  • maintain the proper grade point average required for specific major.
  • achieve at least a 2.0 grade point average in their associate's degree coursework.
  • complete all developmental coursework as defined by NKU placement policies.
  • satisfy all entry requirements for selective baccalaureate degree programs if enrollment in such programs is desired.

Selective Admission Programs

The Dual Admission Program admits Gateway students into the University. However, admission to NKU's selective admission programs is determined by criteria established by the individual degree programs and by any existing program articulation agreement between the two institutions. Participation in the Dual Admission Program does not guarantee admission to the selective admission programs.

Concurrently Enrolled Students

Students taking courses at both Gateway and NKU are considered Concurrently Enrolled Students. See Concurrent Enrollment Program for additional information.
